Growth Angelica archangelica is a biennial, herbaceous plant that grows to a maximum height of around 2.5 metres (8 feet) and spreads no wider than 90cm (3 feet). The compound, biternate, yellow-green leaves have distinctive inflated stem bases while the tiny white flowers are borne in large flat-topped clusters known as umbels. As a biennial, it takes two growing seasons for plants to reach flowering stage, but the plants leaves and stems can be harvested within 90-100 days. Angelica tolerates cold winters by dying back to ground level and then producing fresh growth once spring returns. The plant then dies after completing the seed ripening process.
