Celery Seed Essential Oil (Apium graveolens) Derived from the same botanical family as carrot, parsley, and fennel, celery seed essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the seeds. It is valued both as a flavouring in foods and, in smaller quantities, as a distinctive note in fine perfumery. Traditionally, celery seed oil has been used to soothe a nervous stomach. Before the Middle Ages, its wild ancestor—known as selinon or smallage—was prized for its diuretic and carminative properties, helping to relieve water retention and digestive discomfort. Modern studies suggest that celery seed may have mild tranquillising effects and could assist in easing arthritic pain. Other research indicates that its compounds may help protect the liver from the carcinogenic effects of environmental toxins. Uses:Add 4–6 drops to a warm bath for a soothing soak, or use in an oil burner for aromatic relaxation.
